RADIOMICS SIMPLIFIED FOR THE PRACTICING RADIOLOGIST

*Som Biswas MD.

ABSTRACT

Radiomics is an emerging tool in medical imaging that extracts quantitative features from standard images to assist with diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment response assessment. Although the concept is often presented through complex algorithms and data science terminology, its clinical utility can be understood without deep technical expertise. For practicing radiologists, radiomics offers an opportunity to enhance decision-making by uncovering patterns within images that are not perceptible to the human eye. This article distills the essential concepts of radiomics into a practical overview for clinical use, including how radiomic features are derived, validated, and potentially integrated into routine workflows. Emphasis is placed on understanding what radiomics can and cannot currently offer, where it is showing promise, and what radiologists should consider when interpreting or implementing radiomics-informed tools. The aim is to equip radiologists with the knowledge needed to critically evaluate and effectively use radiomics in everyday practice.
